Knives

Questions about our knives, your order, or about us? The answer is probably below. Should you not be able to find what you are looking for below. Feel free to to contact us!

How often should i sharpen my knives?

That depends on how you use your knives. With normal home use a chef's knife probably needs sharpening once or twice a year. You can read how to sharpen a knife in our learning center here
To keep your knife sharper for longer, do not cut on hard surfaces such as glass or stoneware and avoid putting your knives in a drawer with other knives.

How should i clean my knives?

Do not put BARE Cookware knives in the dishwasher! Our knives are not dishwasher safe.
After use, run the blade of the knife under the tap and brush any foodstuffs off with a non-abrasive sponge or brush (watch your fingers). Then dry the knife carefully with a clean towel. For a more in-depth guide to maintenance of chef's knives check this article in our learning section.

How should i store knives?

We strongly advise against storing your chef's knife in a kitchen drawer. You run the risk of cutting yourself while going through your drawer and the cutting edge of the knife comes into contact with other cutlery which dulls and scratches the knife.
There are two factors to consider when storing knives, firstly safety, and secondly not damaging the knives. We offer a gorgeous magnet strip to perfectly store your knife. Besides a magnet strip, a knife block is also a good way to store a knife. Make sure to dry your knives very well before putting them away so mold doesn't form in the knife block.

CAN BARE COOKWARE knives rust?

Unfortunately, all good knives can rust. This is because the harder types of steel - which make for a sharper knife - are less rust-resistant than softer types of stainless steels. Our steel of choice is exceptionally rust resistant and shouldn't rust when properly handled, but given bad conditions rust can happen. A little rust is nothing to be afraid of and can't hurt your knife. We have an article on how to prevent / deal with rust and keep your knives looking tip-top.

Where are your knives made?

Our knives are produced using imported German steel in the city of Yangjiang. By using high quality materials and a manufacturing partner that has decades of experience in producing culinary knives, we are able to produce a high-quality for an fair price.

What do you mean by carbon negative?

The manufacturing of any product results in carbon dioxide (CO₂) being released into the atmosphere, the greenhouse gas. This is commonly believe to be one of the main driver behind global warming. By compensating all CO₂ released during manufacturing and distribution of our products ten times we try to do our part to maintain our beautiful planet. If you would like to find out exactly how we do this, you can read on here.

Magnet strip

Questions about our magnet strip.

Does the magnet strip work with all knives?

Our magnet strip has a very powerful magnet that ensures knives that are less magnetic can also be stored securely. Ceramic knives do not work with the magnet strip for obvious reasons. We have tested many kitchen utensils including chef's knives, paring knives, box cutters, vegetable peelers, whisks and even small pans. We haven't found a knife yet that isn't held securely by the magnet strip. However, there are grades of stainless steel that are (almost) non-magnetic, these are not generally used in the production of knives. Out there somewhere is probably a knife that doesn't hold on our magnet strip, but we haven't found it yet. If you are unsure if your knife will work with this magnet strip you can always send us an email or make use of our 60 day no-questions asked return policy.

How do i attach the MAGNET strip to the wall?

Included with the magnet strip are two screws and plugs which can be used to secure the backplate of the magnet strip to a wall or cabinet. After the backplate is mounted, simply place the magnet strip over the backplate, and the magnet will lock it into place. Take care not to pinch your fingers between the wall/backplate and the magnet strip!

What MAINTENANCE is required for the MAGNET strip?

Generally very little. To clean the strip you can use a damp cloth. After a while the surface of the strip might get a little worn out, applying a little oil can go a long way. Here you can read how you can maintain the magnet strip.

About us

Would you like to know more about us?

Why are our knives so great?

We use high quality German steel and natural hardwood to produce our knives. Our unique manufacturing technique hardens the steel and leaves a beautiful finish. Finally all of our products are carbon negative. This means every product sold contributes to a more sustainable future.

How did we get started?

A couple of years ago Max went shopping for a new chef's knife. He had been using a set he got as a gift and was looking for something better.  His requirements we're quite simple, sustainable materials and high quality steel. All the knives he found either had cheap plastic handles or were very expensive.

A chef's knife should last a lifetime, and taken care of, a good chef's knife will. By creating something beautiful we wanted to encourage people to take care of their tools, which is good for the planet and your wallet. We got to work and came up with our first Kickstarter: BARE knives, combining honest materials, a fair price and a striking design.
